There is a vacancy for a permanent associate professor position at the Geophysical Institute , University of Bergen, within the field of physical oceanography. The place of work is the Geophysical Institute, Allégaten 70, in Bergen.

About the institute

The Geophysical Institute was established by Norwegian pioneers in meteorology and oceanography 100 years ago. The institute is housed in historical buildings south of Nygårdshøyden in Bergen.

Geophysical Institute carries out research and provides education in meteorology, climate, physical, dynamical and chemical oceanography. Teaching includes undergraduate courses, and courses and supervision of master students and PhD candidates. In 2015, the Institute educated and supervised approximately 50 undergraduates, 60 master’s students and 40 doctoral candidates.

The Institute has 19 permanent scientific positions and 20 technical / administrative positions. In addition, the Institute has currently 14 additional adjunct professors and approximately 60 PhD students, postdocs and full-time researchers.

Geophysical Institute has a close and dynamic collaboration with the Bjerknes centre for climate research.

Work tasks / research field

The ocean plays a central role in the climate system, and increased understanding of this role can contribute to improved predictions of the climate evolution. Moreover, research, development and commercial activity related to the ocean and the coast has a unique position in Norway. The Geophysical Institute wishes therefore to strengthen the oceanographic research and education, and search for a person who has ambitions and research plans within this field. The successful candidate is expected to pursue high quality research in ocean dynamics. The range of possible research areas includes, but is not limited to, large-scale ocean circulation, mesoscale and submesoscale dynamics, water mass transformations, shelf-basin interaction, frontal processes, ocean-sea ice-atmosphere interactions, ocean-ice shelf interactions, and high-latitude oceanography.

The applicant will be expected to develop an active research program, supervise master and graduate students, and teach relevant courses at all levels. The applicant is expected to build activities synergistic and complementary to the physical oceanography research group which conducts extensive observational studies at a range of scales from small scale mixing to regional ocean circulation.

According to the University’s general rules, employees can, within their normal duties and

professional skills, also be instructed to teach, supervise, and give exams outside the unit of affiliation.

Research : qualifications and personal qualities

The applicant must :

• have a doctoral degree in a relevant field or equivalent qualifications
• have a strong and relevant publication record in the international peer-review literature
• document competence in theoretical understanding of ocean dynamics
• have experience in numerical modelling and / or observations of ocean circulation and dynamical processes which may strengthen this activity at the department
• demonstrate collaboration with an international network
• demonstrate success in securing funding for research
• candidates should be able to demonstrate interpersonal skills and the ability to work and communicate well with others in a team environment.
• have excellent skills in oral and written English

Emphasis will be laid on research experience, ambitions and potential, as well as expertise that would complement and amalgamate the present oceanography research group combining theoretical and experimental approaches. Personal and relational qualities will also be emphasised.

Teaching : qualifications and personal qualities

Applicants should produce evidence of their teaching qualifications and document experience in teaching and supervision of students. Such evidence can include, for instance :

In general, the teaching language is Norwegian, but the appointed applicant must also be able to teach in English. The successful applicant must be able to teach in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language within two years of being appointed.

Basic teaching training is a requirement, but a successful applicant who does not have such competence at the time of appointment will be offered training and will be required to produce evidence of such training within one year of the date of appointment. This deadline is extended to two years for a successful applicant who does not master a Scandinavian language at the time of appointment.
