Summer Internship 2027 - AI and Digital Materials Characterization, Sunndalsøra

Technology Development teams drive aluminium product, process and casting innovation, supporting operations and customers through advanced laboratory, pilot-scale and digital capabilities. Our R&D Centers are located in Sunndalsøra, Karmøy and Cassopolis, Michigan, USA.
We work closely with production plants, customers and research partners to solve industrial challenges and develop future aluminium solutions. Key focus areas include digitalization and artificial intelligence.
As a summer intern, you will work alongside experienced researchers and technicians on real industrial projects, gaining hands-on experience with research, testing, analysis and technology development in an international R&D environment.

What you will be doing

• Continue development of AI-based image analysis methods for metallographic investigations.
• Test, verify and implement automated workflows for materials characterization and reporting.
• Explore how AI and data-driven methods can improve efficiency and decision-making in materials analysis.

What will make you successful?

• Master student in Metallurgy, Materials Science, Data Science, Computer Science, Physics or a related field.
• Interest in artificial intelligence, image analysis and data-driven problem solving.
• Programming experience in Python or similar tools is an advantage.
• Structured, curious and motivated to solve real industrial challenges.
