Overview
Scientific Developer / Researcher in Atmospheric Transport Modelling – MET Norway. Hybrid office in Oslo. The position involves scientific development and programming within high-quality research and operational tools, focusing on dispersion of radioactivity, volcanic ash and air pollution.
We have a position open as researcher / developer / scientific programmer in atmospheric transport modelling related to nuclear accidents, volcanic eruptions and air pollution. The candidate will contribute to technical and scientific developments of emergency modelling and the development of evaluation tools (comparing model results to observations) related to atmospheric dispersion in general (including air quality and climate modelling results). New AI-based tools are under development and the candidate is expected to participate in this activity.
MET Norway provides meteorological services for civilian and military purposes, including weather forecasting, on-demand services, climate monitoring and R&D within meteorology and oceanography. Our goal is to help protect life and property. We run a suite of forecast models and downstream services, including dispersion models for emergency preparedness to support national authorities on radioactivity (DSA) and civil aviation (Luftfartsttilsynet).
Modelling dispersion of radioactivity originated after the Chernobyl accident; dispersion calculations are currently carried out for all Ukrainian nuclear reactors four times per day. After the Eyjafjallajökull eruption in 2010, MET developed a dispersion model for volcanic ash as part of the preparedness modelling system. MET Norway also models air pollution on local, regional and global scales and delivers regional air quality forecasting in the European CAMS project. We are responsible for local air quality forecasting for Norway.
Responsibilities
The successful applicant will work within the field of dispersion modelling in the atmosphere for contingency / emergency preparedness (e.g., dispersion of ash plumes and radioactivity). He / she will contribute to the development of technical systems supporting transport models, dissemination of model results, technical implementation and advanced scientific diagnosis of results, independently and in collaboration with others. He / she will also work on the evaluation of air pollution and climate models, contributing to development of tools / scripts (in Python) for diagnosing air quality and climate model results. Our scientific activities may depend on external funding, and the candidate might contribute to acquisition of relevant projects.
