Associate professor

At the Department of Sociology, University of Bergen, there is a vacancy for a permanent position as Associate Professor in Sociology. The position requires being able to teach sociology in Norwegian from day one.

The Department of Sociology is part of an extensive social science environment at The Faculty of Social Sciences and collaborates with other sociology departments nationally and internationally. The comprehensive teaching programmes include a one-year sociology programme, a Bachelor programme; a Master programme, as well as a Teacher Programme with specialization in sociology. The current research at the department represents a broad profile based on long research traditions. The research is concentrated on three priority areas : Welfare, Inequality and Life course (VUL), Social movements, Environment and Migration (SMEM) and Work, Knowledge, Inequality and Education (AKU).

The successful applicant is expected to participate in the department’s research and teaching activities as well as efforts to strengthen externally funded research. It is desirable that the successful applicant contribute to the development of one or several of the department’s research priority areas and research interests and, has a positive attitude to taking on administrative tasks and management functions.

Work tasks :

  • Responsibility for teaching and research in sociology
  • Research within own professional field and research interests
  • Participate in further development of the academic field and teaching
  • Participating in the department’s strategic scientific policy
  • Responsibility for administrative tasks
  • Supervision of bachelor-, master- and doctoral candidates
  • Examination work on all levels
  • Responsibility to apply for external funding of research projects

Qualifications and personal qualities :

  • The applicant must have a doctoral degree or equivalent qualifications in sociology.
  • Applicants ought to display an ability to publish at a high international level within sociology beyond their PhD dissertation.
  • Applicants must be willing and able to teach compulsory courses in sociology at both the undergraduate and the graduate level, and take part in planning and implementation of teaching, supervision and examination.
  • Assessment and ranking will take into account the time span within which the results were achieved, with the greatest emphasis placed on recently achieved results.
  • Personal aptitude will be of great importance. Cooperative skills, as well as future plans for research, and ambitions when it comes to teaching will be of added value.
  • The successful applicant must be willing and able to teach compulsory courses at both graduate and undergraduate level at the department. The teaching language will normally be Norwegian. It is required that the person appointed is able to teach in Norwegian at the time of hiring. The workplace is in Bergen, and the position requires a daily physical presence at the Department of Sociology.

    Educational competence :

    Basic teaching training and experience in the supervision of students at university level is a requirement for the position as associate professor (link). This implies completed formal pedagogical training, as well as basic skills in planning, implementation, evaluation and development of teaching and supervision. Should the successful applicant not have such competence at the time of appointment, he / she will be required to document such training within two years of the date of appointment.

    Educational competence must be documented in a pedagogical portfolio which should include a documented overview of practical experience and competence as well as a brief reflection statement. The statement should primarily describe the applicant’s own teaching philosophy and an evaluation of own teaching in relation to his / her knowledge of students’ learning at a higher education level.
