About the project / work tasks :
CO2 hydrates may form a secondary seal during deep CO2 storage in saline aquifers or depleted oil / gas fields. This may happen as escaped, buoyant CO2 migrates upward through a migration pathway (e.g., permeable pore space, along the well bore, faults), and eventually migrates into the CO2 gas hydrate stability zone. Hydrate-based sealing may be a significant factor in the de-risking of many potential storage sites, where the reservoir and caprock are situated below or in the CO2 gas hydrate stability zone. The CoolSeal project´s overall objective is to provide an experimental and numerical framework to predict CO2 gas hydrate self-sealing in geological formations. Our multi-scale approach is cross-disciplinary and aims to identify criteria and quantify the risk mitigating potential of CO2 gas hydrate sealing.
The PhD candidate will work in an interdisciplinary research group with both experimental activities and numerical modelling. The PhD candidate’s tasks will primarily be to model and simulate CO2 hydrate sealing in sediments but also to take part in analysing and interpreting physical experiments. The PhD candidate will collaborate with industry partners and take active part in a larger professional environment in applied research.
